Iceland Packing Essentials

Iceland is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. These stunning landscapes were formed with a variety of extreme weather conditions. Visiting the land of fire and ice requires thoughtful packing. To help you stay warm and dry on your journey, we’re sharing our own packing list.

We spent a few days exploring Reykjavik and the majority of the time driving the Ring Road in a campervan. It is important to plan for all varieties of weather. If you’re doing either of these things or anything in between - consider bringing some of these items!

Here’s the full list, including some recommended item links and explanations:

Clothing & Accessories

Packable puff / down coat

• Base layers - I personally love Uniqlo’s Heat Tech line and some fleece leggings

• Snow pants or water resistant pants

• Fleece jacket or lightweight sweater

• Comfortable layers for relaxing and sunny days and lounging - think t-shirt and yoga pants

• Rain coat

• Rain Pants - not needed if your pants are water resistant

• Gloves - water resistant if possible

• Scarf - tie it well to prevent it from blowing away in a surprise gust of wind!

• Beanie / warm hat - I love my fleece-lined wool hat from Icewear

• Swimsuit - If you plan to visit any hot springs or pools

• Thick, warm socks - consider wool!

• Simple shirts and light pants

• Underwear

• Waterproof hiking boots or shoes

• Sandals or flip flops - these are great when camping for midnight trips to the rest room

Hygiene and Self Care

• Sunscreen

• Antiperspirant

• Shampoo, Conditioner, and other preferred products

• Daily Medications and other OTC remedies

• Prescriptions in original bottles

• Medical equipment (CPAP, etc)

Daily life

• Reusable shopping bags

• Reusable water bottle

• Quick dry microfiber towel - we love the Packtowl

• Water resistant backpack or a backpack with a rain cover that can be secured

• Laundry detergent sheets - we use Earth Breeze

• Travel clothes line - This Seat to Summit Lite is very compact

• Hiking Poles

• Sleeping mask - though your hotel or van likely has dark curtains for the midnight sun

Documents

• Passport

• International Driving Permit

• Travel credit cards & bank cards

Tech

• Phone + charger

• Laptop + charger

• Charging blocks

• iPad / Tablet + charger

• Earbuds / Headphones
