New Year, Same Great Notion [Notion Review]

In the last year, I’ve taken on a lot of projects. Beyond a 9-5 job and all of the time it takes to fix up a home I have taken on all that is involved in content creation.

I’m no stranger to juggling large projects with small details. As I quickly learned - creator tasks like videography, shot lists, production calendars, instagram content, and blog posts (hello!) require juggling skills that I just did not have the bandwidth for. My usual go-to technologies like Google Docs and Trello just weren’t cutting it.

After trying several things I discovered Notion. It’s an easy-to-use program that allows me to manage my projects without headaches. I was a skeptic at first - why go through the hassle of trialing new systems if the my favorites work just fine? And that’s the thing - it wasn’t fine at all. There are so many layers and pieces to making a travel brand like ours build a reach and reputation for quality content on the side. The struggle to keep up with the minor details made this adventure less enjoyable, and that’s no good!

The Away with the Mays Content Calendar on Notion.

I finally took the leap after seeing so much good buzz online and signed up for a free account. And then…I ignored it for a couple of months. As my account gathered dust, my attempt to juggle content management continued. While listening to a podcast in the car I heard the host rave about Notion and its capacity to help someone batch out content. I chose to take it as a sign. I had run from it long enough, I suppose. It was time to make a commitment to create a healthy production workflow and own this process.

I found great guides, I tried a handful of templates, and I finally dialed in a dashboard that works for me and my actual needs as a creator.

Notion takes things that I love - docs, dashboards, and spreadsheets - and integrates them into a single workspace of my design. For those who aren’t interested in building your own workspaces or pages, you’re in luck. the Template Gallery has amazing pages that will instantly integrate with your account. There is also no shortage of templates made by the enthusiastic Notion user community.

Now I have a colorful Notion dashboard for Away with the Mays. I have a content calendar (shared above) that allows me to prioritize and organize upcoming posts on Instagram and other short form platforms. I have a blog manager that gives me designated spaces to outline, draft, and revise my blog posts. I also have a YouTube dashboard where I can storyboard upcoming videos, write video description information, and house graphics for thumbnails.

Notion Template Gallery Feature: Plan a Trip (w Notion AI)

What I really love is the seamless transition from the Mac OS to the iPad to my iPhone. It’s so much easier to write Reel descriptions on the computer and copy them over from the iPhone while uploading the reel. What a game changer for me!
